Poor Education and Limited Access

The education system needs in large part of being built.

Around 23% of children are not attending any type of education in Guinea-Bissau, according to Plan International (2018). There is a high rate of school leaving due to economic, social and cultural reasons. 63% of students finished primary school and only 22% of those managed to finish secondary (2015).

Little environmental awareness and low literacy rate around 50% and high rate of school leaving. Significant gender inequality, 70% of men who are able to read and write in a basic form is high compared to 41% of women.

The NSEF’s program Maria da Conceição Té (MCT) Institute is an institution which is the engineering development, supplementary school and environmental education program focused on innovation and skills for youth, and raising community awareness and respect for nature. Its domains are the followings:

The Foundation uses the following environmental educational programmes from Foundation for Environmental Education:

  1. work towards sustainable development of beaches and marinas;
  2. a network of international youth engaged in environmental journalism and Education for Sustainable Development;
  3. a programme designed for schools, which reflects all the functions forest fulfil for people, from economic and ecological to social and cultural;
  4. and to increase the use of environmentally friendly and sustainable methods, together with raising awareness and creating behavioural changes.
